Every Child Needs a Teacher

Middle Littlesheep came home from school last week with lots of statistics including:

  • 132 million children can’t go to school
  • We need 1.7 more million teachers (over 1 million more for Africa)

And then told me how he’d made puppets at school to send to our MP to take to the government to take to other governments to get every child an education…

Unpicking all the details and a bit of digging (and reading of the website on the sticker he was given for helping!) it turns out that they made puppet teachers for the Send My Friend to School campaign organised by the Global Campaign for Education UK.

Next week (21st-27th April 2013) marks their Global Action Week, which will see millions of people taking part in GCE Members’ activities worldwide to support the ‘Every Child Needs a Teacher‘ campaign.

In the UK the campaign is asking teachers and their pupils to get creative and remind world leaders that every child needs a teacher and children are making brightly coloured and symbolic cut-out teachers to represent the 1.7 million teachers missing from schools around the world and sending them to their MP to ask them to deliver them to the Prime Minister to remind the UK government of their promise to make sure all children have access to primary education by 2015.
